CNN Reports on TEAM Training

Historically, the TEAM Coalition has been an organization that supports its members with initiatives not often made known to the fans at the ballparks or to the public in general. In June of 2003, that changed. CNN produced a story on TEAM training and the efforts of leagues, teams, and stadiums to ensure fan safety while enjoying their experience at the ballpark.

The Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards and ARAMARK participated in the story. Footage of the ushers being TEAM trained, vendors selling beer on the Eutaw Street concourse as well as in the seats, and the designated driver booth were all included in the final story. TEAM trainer Ryan Mick was interviewed as well as Kevin Hallinan, the new TEAM Chairman and Senior Vice President of Security and Facility Management for Major League Baseball.

The final product aired on CNN on Wednesday, June 25, 2003. Following that, over 200 stations across the country picked up the story and aired it between the 25th of June and the 1st of July.

NHTSA: You Drink & Drive. You Lose.

TEAM: You Designate a Driver & Everybody Wins.

The July 4th holiday is traditionally a time of celebrating the nation’s birthday with fireworks, baseball, and backyard BBQs. It is also a period of increased drunk driving crashes and fatalities on roadways.

To educate Americans about this unfortunate fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA – a department of the Department of Transportation) produced a 30 second television commercial reminding people to be responsible, designate a driver, and not to drive while impaired. The spot was aired on national TV networks between June 27th and July 13th.

TEAM assisted in communicating this message in several ways. First, all 28 U.S.-based MLB ball parks received a copy of the commercial to show on the video board in the ball park during games. In addition, a press release went out in every MLB market linking the effort of the ballparks to keep fans safe with the efforts of police on the highways.

Further, TEAM co-sponsored four press conferences held at MLB ballparks to announce the increased presence of city, county, and state patrols to prevent drunk driving during the holiday period. Press conferences were held in Atlanta at Turner Field, Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium, Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field, and Miami at Pro Player Stadium.

Several TV news stories and print stories came from these events. Click on TEAM in the News to see these stories.

TEAM Joins MLB at

All Star Game

Alcohol management was a top priority for MLB at the All Star Game on July 15th at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.

MLB Security invited TEAM to help monitor the alcohol management at the Home Run Derby and the All Star Game – the two most high profile events of four day celebration.

TEAM staff members and Board members participated in MLB security meetings each day which also included Chicago Police, and the FBI.

SportService vendors checked IDs aggressively, limited service to four beers per purchase, and cut off beer sales after the last out of the 7th inning.

June IDP at OSU Offers Best Practices

Stadium operations and concessions managers from across the country representing both professional and college level facilities playing host to football, basketball, baseball, and hockey teams gathered at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of the Ohio State University on June 18th and 19th.

In addition to the standard alcohol management curriculum, workshop participants heard from Anheuser-Busch and Miller Brewing representatives about the responsibility programs each brewer offers to stadiums through their network of distributors.

Further, OSU chief of police spoke about the challenges he faces each year with limited resources and hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic fans. His recommendation with respect to beer sales is to stop serving beer at the tail gate parties outside the stadium and sell beer in the stadium where it can be controlled and monitored.

Finally, Linda Pantell, Senior Manager of Facility Operations for Major League Baseball, spoke to the group about TEAM best practices in alcohol management including the MLB Code of Conduct and how individual MLB clubs are working directly with TEAM to communicate security and alcohol policies to their fans.

The local NBC affiliate did a story on the training. Click on TEAM in the News to view the story.

Stepping Up to the Plate Poster Big Success

Text Box: To open the 2003 MLB season, TEAM and several of it’s member organizations (Anheuser-Busch, Miller Brewing Company, Coors Brewing Company, MLB, and the Department of Transportation) produced a poster recognizing the accomplishment of having all 28 U.S.-based MLB clubs trained in TEAM’s alcohol management training program. The poster was sent to city leaders, state law makers, and reporters in major markets around MLB clubs. Additionally, posters were given to designated drivers who signed up in the ballparks. In December of 2002 and February of 2003, TEAM honored MLB clubs and their concessions partners for their outstanding commitment to alcohol management training. During the last two years, over 12,000 event-day employees from concessions workers to us

hers have been trained in effective alcohol management. TEAM congratulated those organizations that have made this training an integral part of their employee training. The PDF version of the poster is available from the TEAM website.

In addition to the poster, TEAM also introduced our new Chairman, Kevin Hallinan, Senior Vice President of Security and Facility Management for Major League Baseball, to his new position with a satellite TV tour and radio tour to correspond to the beginning of the baseball season. Kevin talked to 12 TV stations and 20 radio stations across the country about the importance MLB and its clubs place on TEAM training.
